SMALLVILLE ADVENTURES #1
"PETE ROSS: SMALLVILLE MAN OF THE YEAR"
by TJ White
Pete Ross, who is currently studying Political Science at Central Kansas University, was awarded with a "Citizen of the Year" award yesterday by Mayor Gerald Haymes Newton.
"It's wonderful to see a young man so devoted to the welfare of the community," Mayor Newton told the Post. Pete Ross was awarded for his outstanding efforts in organizing a campaign which helped rebuild homes that were damaged by tornadoes last Spring. In addition to countless hours volunteering on his own time rebuilding homes, he also brought the community together in on the project. He also spent helped organized a rock concert for the town that attracted the likes of such big name artists as Remy Zemo, who played their hit song "Somebody Save Me" at the concert this past summer.
In accepting the award, Pete Ross acknowledged the help of the Smallville Post's financial support, as well as the help of its staff- particularily Clark Kent, myself, Chloe Sullivan and Andy McCallister. In his own words, he said, "I would like to take this time to thank everyone for their tireless participation in this endeavour. I would like to thank the Kents for the enomourous amount of help that they put into this project. Mayor Gerald Haymes Newton, I acknowledge you as being a true hero and model for me as a young aspiring politician- someone who could look at a disaster as a way of bringing people together."
He then took the time to make a public announcement to the town concerning his relationship to long-time girlfriend, Lana Lang. "I would also like to take this time to announce my engagement to my long-time, girlfriend, Lana Lang." He then brough Lana on stage and gave her the award. "I share this award with you."
It was a touching end to a story that began with bitter destruction some months ago. Some might remember that many people were myseteriously rescued by a 'superboy' who originally was thought by some to be an angel. Pete Ross joked, "I am this mysterious 'Superboy.' But perhaps, with Lana at my side, she can make me into a Superman."
An awards dinner at the Smallville Country Club followed.

NARRATOR ADVENTURES:
We arrive at a small country club, where about 100 or so people have gathered for an above-average meal consisting of roasted chicken, roasted potatoes and cooked vegetables. Pete Ross is there, after accepting the award for Citizen of the Year at a banquet congratulating all those who helped with volunteering for the Smallville Tornado Action Relef Team (or STAR team).
Clark is also a guest of honor, as is Martha and Jonathan Kent.
NARRATOR ADVENTURES:
Clark Kent, a young man in his early twenties with dark black hair, blue eyes, wearing a black suit and tie and black eyeglasses, sits a table with his parents.
Pete Ross, a blonde-haired man in his early twenties, wearing a jet black tuxedo has his arms around Lana Lang, a knock-out redhead, who's wearing a green dress with sleeves. Pete approaches Clark and his family at the table the five of them are all sitting at.
Pete Ross:
Clark! Martha, Jonatha. Thanks again for all your hard work this year- really couldn't do it without you.
Martha:
You already thanked us a dozen times today, Pete.
Pete:
I know, I know, but somehow, I just don't think it would be right not to thank you again.
I actually didn't think I was going to win this award this year- I thought the maybe the mayor was going to get it.
Lana:
Once again, you've underestimated yourself.
Pete:
So, Clark, how are things at the Post?
Clark:
It's been good. They're still trying to convince me I should stay in Smallville.
Pete:
The big city is calling you, huh? Any luck finding any leads for a job?
Clark:
...I'm looking at options. Central City was one option. Metropolis or Gotham City was another.
Pete Ross:
You'd have to be batty to consider moving to Gotham. That place is a hellhole.
What about Metropolis?
Clark:
I'm thinking about it. TJ is trying to get me an interview with his Dad. His Dad's been a little too busy, but he thinks he might be able to convince him to give me at least an interview.
Pete:
No special favours for his son, huh?
Clark:
I wouldn't want any special favors anyways. I just want a fair chance like everyone else.
There's always somewhere else.
(a councilman interrupts their conversation)
Pete! Pete Ross! Good to see you, son. Congratulations (shakes his hand)
Pete:
(laughs, and waves good-bye to Clark)
We'll catch up later, okay?
Clark:
No problem, Pete.
Narrator:
(It's a couple hours later, Clark walks out of the country club for a minute to get some fresh air, he just looks at the stars, wondering where he is going)
Jonathan Kent:
(walks outside and puts his hand on Clark's shoulder)
Penny for your thoughts, son?
Clark:
I was just thinking what Pete said earlier when I was talking about moving. I'm still not sure where to go.
The future just seems so confusing. I mean, I want to continue my journalism career..but I know there's something bigger for me than that too. And I'm sure where to go.
Jonathan:
Look, son, I know your circumstances are, let's say, unique..but I understand the whole concept of moving on. I had to make the same decisions when I was your age too- whether to go into mechanics, or work on the farm for my Father.
It was still a decision about where I was going to go- to the city- or stay on the farm.
Clark:
Yeah- but I feel I need to be in the city. It's where I can do the most good, right? But which city? I can't be everywhere- I already know that. What if I make the wrong choice?
Jonathan "Pa" Kent:
Son, it's an important decision, and you have to trust yourself that you'll make the right one. Your Ma and I will keep you on the straight and narrow- we'll let you know if you've made the right decision.
Now, it's wonderful that you want to be responisble, but now's not the time to contemplate the future. Now's the time to enjoy your time with Pete and Lana. You'll have plenty of time to think about this tomorrow afternoon.
How about we let it go till tomorrow, then you and I, we'll talk your options through.
Clark:
(sighs)
Okay. I guess all the talk about the tornadoes just reminded me I can so much more.
Jonathan "Pa" Kent-
Son, I always told you- you were here for a reason.
But today...you were here to have some dessert. C'mon, before they run out of apple pie.
Narrator adventures:
Pa Kent and Clark come back into the country club, Pa and Clark get into line to get some pie)
Pa begins to talk to one of the people in line, Ben Hubbard, a man around his age, and a neighbor of his)
Clark pulls out a crumbled-up piece of paper he had been scribbling on earlier)
(the paper says "WHERE?" and the list is written down-)
-METROPOLIS?
-GOTHAM CITY?
-CENTRAL CITY?
-KEYSTONE?
-NEW YORK CITY?
-KANSAS CITY?
-CLEVELAND?
-TORONTO?
-THE WORLD???
(Before Pa can see him, he puts it back in his pocket, sighes and tries to relax and he gets in line for a piece of pie)
END OF CHAPTER ONE.
